Clippers Shut Down Jefferson

Box Score

Columbiana (18-7) hosted Jefferson in an OHSAA Sectional Final on Wednesday afternoon.  The Clippers used a dominant pitching performance from Riley McElwain to a 3-0 victory and a trip to the Niles district semifinals Monday May 23rd against the Springfield Tigers.

After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons were able to get runners to second and third with one out, following a single, walk, and wild pitch.  At this point, McElwain buckled down striking out the next two batters and cruising the rest of the way allowing only one single over the next four innings.

In the bottom frame, McElwain helped his own cause singling and moving to second on a Falcon error.  After a ground out Devin Daugherty gave the Clippers a 1-0 with a single to left scoring McElwain.

In the bottom of the third inning the Clippers tacked on two more runs.  Bayden Pipoly walked with one out and advanced to third on a ground out.  With two outs Zachary Pleska walked and Seth Spooner followed with a single bringing home Pipoly.  Pleska would then come around to score on a wild pitch giving the Clippers a 3-0 lead.

The three runs were all the Columbiana pitchers would need.  McElwain finished the day pitching six innings giving up two hits and striking out nine.  Seth Spooner picked up his third save of the year pitching the seventh inning allowing one hit and striking out one.

Daugherty led the way offensively for the Clippers with two hits including a double and a walk.

The Clippers will look to add a game before their next OHSAA contest on Monday.
