Columbiana (3-0) traveled to Berlin Center Saturday afternoon and defeated the Blue Devils of Western Reserve (0-2) 9-1. Seth Spooner (1-0) picked up the victory in 5.1 innings of work. Spooner struck out 13 and allowed one earned run on three hits. Devin Daugherty finished the final 1.2 innings striking out two while not allowing a hit.
The Clippers got off to a fast start scoring four runs in the first inning. Bayden Pipoly led off the game with a double. Eddie Clancy followed and was hit by a pitch. Spooner then singled to left knocking in both Pipoly and Clancy. Spooner would make it to third on the play with some good baserunning and an error by the Blue Devil second baseman. Riley McElwain would then drive a ball to center knocking in Spooner. Alex Eusebio would reach on an error and eventually come around to score on another Blue Devil error off the bat of Ashton Kakavros.
Columbiana would add two more in the second and then tag on 1 in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.
On the day, Spooner would lead the offense with two hits including a triple and three RBI. Clancy also had two hits including a double. McElwain and Daugherty each also doubled, with McElwain also knocking in three runs. Brady Kridler had a big two out hit in the seventh extending the lead and Carson Dota walked three times on the afternoon.
Next up for the Clippers will be its league opener against the Leetonia Bears. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM Monday at Firestone Park.
