2018 Clipper Baseball Preview

Written by Erik Hopfenziz

The Columbiana Clippers  have made huge leaps in the previous three years and look to continue the success under Coach Wolf. The Clippers look to improve this year as the season comes closer by the day.  The Clippers have won three ITCL White division championships under Coach Wolf’s tenure. This year, the Clippers are looking to win the first ever EOAC league title.

On the mound the Clippers lose two spectacular pitchers in Jake Clark and Mitch Davidson. The Clippers return  an excellent pitching staff, however, with Chase Franken (So.) , Zach Fahs (Sr.) and Aj Perkins (Sr.) leading the way. All three  look to improve on successful 2017 seasons. There are also new faces joining the Clippers pitching rotation as Joey Bable (So.), Ryan Fahs (So.),  Wayne Davis (Jr.) and Evan Keneally (Jr.) look to show what they can do in the opening days of the season.

Behind the dish the Clippers lose phenomenal catcher Keenan Green who was a monster in the three years he started. Now the Clippers turn to Erik Hopfenziz (Jr.) who showed a lot of potential in the games he played last year. Backing him up will be Quenton Cross (So.)  who showed promise as a JV player last season.

The Clippers solid outfield is lead by seniors Z. Fahs,  and Perkins with newcomers Michael Ginocchi (Jr.), Hunter Zentner (So.), Philip Slater (Jr.)  and Cross. The Clippers will look to show off some of their speed and cover a lot of ground with the quickness in the outfield.

In the middle infield the Clippers look to be solid. The Clippers return the freshman phenom Franken, but also add two newcomers in the rotation in Bable and R. Fahs. Both Bable and R. Fahs look to round out the infield and be huge contributors in the lineup.

The corners will be manned by reterners Perkins and Kenneally at first with third base being one of the best competitions of the spring.  Look for Davis, R. Fahs, Steven Zarlenga (Jr.) and Stephen Anderson (So.) to continue to compete for every day playing time at the position.

At the plate the Clippers return Franken who led the team in almost every offensive category. Also returning is Z. Fahs, Perkins, Hopfenziz, Ginocchi and Keneally who are all looking to be big contributors.

With all of that being said the Clippers are loading up hoping to achieve more than past years with this young and hungry lineup.
