Box Score
The Columbiana Varsity baseball team fell to South Range 8-1 in OHSAA Tournament action on Friday afternoon. The loss ends the Clippers season at 16-12.
Mitchell Davidson (4-2) got the start for Columbiana and pitched a complete game allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on the afternoon. The score, however, is not an indication as to how Davidson pitched and how the Clippers played. Davidson was excellent through 5.2 innings holding the Raiders to 1 run until a barrage of 1st pitch hits broke the game open with two outs in the sixth. The ultimate dagger came on a three run home run by South Range’s number 9 hitter.
For five innings Davidson matched the Raider’s ace Greg Dunham. Davidson induced a number of fly outs and kept South Range off the board until a 2 out bloop single in the fifth brought home the Raider’s first run.
Offensively, the Clippers had a tough time sustaining any offense, but were able to collect six hits on the afternoon including two by Keenan Green. Matt Weidner, Austin Saverko, Drew Cyrus and Davidson also had base knocks. Columbiana scored its lone run in the top of the 7th. Saverko reached base on a 1 out single. Joey Bennett pinch ran for Saverko and moved to third on Cyrus’s 2 out single. Weidner brought home Bennett when he reached base on an error by the Raider’s third baseman.
