Clippers Handle Adversity in Lisbon

After a huge 1-0 victory in Hanoverton to take Game #1 of the EOAC Championship with United, and Game #2 on the horizon on Wednesday, the Clippers had some work to do on Tuesday against another EOAC opponent in Lisbon. In what many in sports would call a “trap game,” we found ourselves in a deep hole doing into the top of the fourth inning, down 5-0 and not really showing any signs of life against a good pitcher in Brady Carpenter. It would actually be the defense in the bottom half of the third inning that gave the Clippers a slight sense of momentum.

Senior Colin Keleman came on in relief, when we were down 4-0, and after allowing one run that was not his, things locked down for the Clippers. With runners on first and third and nobody out, things were looking very bleak. However, a foiled stolen base attempt by Blue Devils, courtesy of sophomore catcher Hunter Davanzo, and an out at home, courtesy of senior Alex Eusebio, Columbiana was able to get out of the inning at 5-0; an inning that could have gone very south. I believe that these plays made in the bottom of the third sparked the offensive success in the top of the fourth. The Clippers would score not just five but eleven runs to take control of the game.

In that top of the fourth, the Clippers sent seventeen batters to the plate. The inning began a player who is very familiar with getting rallies going, in Colin Keleman. He singled to start the inning, and he reached second on an error. Eusebio then reached on an error before senior Anthony Hall ripped an RBI single. Following back-to-back walks of freshman Avery Young and Davanzo, junior Reese Roush reached on an error, bringing in two runs. Then, after a junior Max Conway walk, back-to-back singles from seniors Ian Less and Devin Daugherty (2-RBIs) kept things rolling. Keleman then got on on an error and scored on an Alex Eusebio triple. Then, after a couple more walks and another error, Roush got himself another RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Hall.

The rest of the way, Keleman would only allow one run while striking out five Blue Devils. With this performance, he earned his second win of the season (and his career). The offense would continue to add runs, which helped the squad get out of Lisbon with a 16-6 victory in six innings. The final offensive numbers for Columbiana… Eusebio had three hits including a triple with four RBIs. Hall had two hits and two RBIs. Keleman also had two hits with an RBI. Conway hit a double, and Less and Daugherty each had singles; Devin’s knock brought in two. Though he did not record a hit, Roush was productive at the plate logging two RBIs. This game gave the Clippers some great offensive momentum heading into Wednesday’s EOAC Championship Game with United.
