What is the most unselfish thing a baseball player can do on the field? Some would say a sacrifice bunt; others might say an all out dive to catch a ball. But, I believe most would agree that standing your ground in the box and taking a fastball to your ribs to get on base for your team is a pretty selfless thing to do. Back in 2015, former head coach Ryan Wolf’s first season, the offense was struggling to get going. In an attempt to get things moving in the right direction, and knowing that the Clippers needed more baserunners, Coach Wolf proposed a trophy for the player who was hit by the most pitches that season. The next game, our very own assistant coach Austin Saverko (Class of 2015) would be hit by not one, not two, but THREE pitches, and he ended up being hit by a total of six pitches that season, to lead the team. And, that is the story of why we have a trophy named “The Sav” that is presented to the player who was hit by the most pitches, at the end of each season.
