The Toronto Red Knights baseball program has been a perennial state-ranked powerhouse for quite some time, and their JV team even got the best of our guys by a score of 15-3 just a couple Saturdays ago. However, on a night that felt more like January than April, it would be the Clippers who survived the elements and came away victorious.
Sophomore Thatcher Smith took the bump and gave the Clippers 3 solid innings while striking out 5 Red Knights to earn himself the W. Smith then handed the ball over to freshman Carson Chaney. Chaney struck out 2 in his inning of work, and then Jackson Davis came in to record all three outs in the fifth. The staff combined for 8 strikeouts across 5 innings (which turned out to be the entire game which was called due to oncoming darkness).
With the score at 6-6 heading into the bottom of the fifth, both teams were informed that it would be the final half inning. Meaning that in order to win, the Clippers would need to score a run right then and there. This run would come on singles from freshmen Carter Griffith and Stephen Varkony before fellow freshman Jackson Davis hit, what we are going to consider, a walk-off sacrifice fly to score Griffith (the game-winning run). However, the Clippers were allowed to continue to hit and did so, scoring 3 more runs to win by a final of 10-6.
The freshman Varkony finished 3 for 3 with an RBI; he also crossed the plate 3 times and stole a base. Ashton McCullough also made huge contributions at the plate with 2 hits, driving in 3 runs and scoring once himself; he also recorded a stolen base. Freshman Carter Griffith had a hit and scored twice, and fellow freshman Carson Chaney had a hit and an RBI. Sophomores Ayden Dennison and Eric Nelson each added a single; Ayden had an RBI and Eric scored a run. Freshmen Jacob Conway (who caught through the cold for the Clippers) and Roman Sanfrey each scored a run. And, though going 0-for-0, the freshman Davis would have the biggest RBI of the game with his sac fly to “walk-off” the win for the Clippers.
The JV team will be back in action on Thursday to host the Springfield Tigers at Firestone Park #ClipThat
