Good Night for the Program

Divide and conquer; 20-strong, the Clippers split up 10 and 10 on Monday, going their separate ways to take on a couple of local foes. The Varsity squad took on East Palestine at home, while the JV squad jumped over to Crestview for the first time in quite awhile.

In the first EOAC matchup of the season, the Varsity took on the Bulldogs, who beat us twice last year by a combined score of 19-3. Junior Avery Young got the start on the mound, and he went 4 innings, surrendering just 3 hits and allowing 0 runs, while striking out 6 Bulldogs to earn the W. Fellow junior Drennen Bosela would come on to throw the final 2 frames (due to mercy run), allowing just 1 hit and 0 earned runs, while striking out 4. Offensively, Young stayed hot at the plate to begin the Clippers’ scoring, singling and coming all the way around on a steal and some passed balls. The offense did struggle for a moment to get things going again until the bottom of the 4th when things really took off. We scored 6 runs with 2 outs thanks to putting some balls in play and some walks, capped off by a couple of singles from senior Hunter Davanzo and the junior Bosela. In the top of the 5th, the Bulldogs would get on the board, but for only 2 unearned runs. The Clippers got those 2 runs back in the bottom half, thanks to some singles from sophomore Ethan Lehnerd, junior Nick Klindworth, sophomore Beckett Wilson. And, in the bottom of the 6th, we put an end to things with a 12-2 mercy rule courtesy of a couple errors and a walk by senior Ashton McCullough and, most importantly, a walk-off single by the junior Klindworth over the second baseman’s head to plate the final 2 runs.

Juniors Young and Klindworth finished with 2 hits each; Klindworth and the senior Davanzo (single) finished with 2 RBIs each. Young scored 2 runs and stole a bag. Sophomore Ethan Lehnerd singled and scored 3 runs, stealing 2 bases along the way. Junior Drennen Bosela had a hit, an RBI, a run, and stole a base. Sophomores Liam McElwain and Beckett Wilson each added hits and a pair of stolen bases each. Senior Ashton McCullough added a stolen bag and run scored.

The JV team headed over to Crestview to take on the Rebels. It was all gas, no brakes, for the Clippers in a 25-2 rout. Pitcher-by-committee, freshman Jackson Davis led things off on the mound, followed by fellow freshmen Stephen Varkony, Carter Griffith, and Carson Chaney. The staff only allowed 5 hits combined in their 5 total innings of work. Davis and Varkony each struck out 3, and Chaney punched out 2. At the plate, it took some time to get on the board, but once we did, it was off to the races. An RBI groundout by sophomore Eric Nelson got the Clippers on the up and running in the top of the second. We would score 6 runs in the top of the 3rd thanks to singles from freshmen Roman Sanfrey, Varkony, and Davis, along with some walks and errors. The Clippers scored 8 more in the top of the 4th courtesy of a double by Davis and a single by Griffith, along with some more fielding blunders, walks, and hit-by-pitches. The Rebels would strike for their only 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th, before the Clippers put up a 10-spot in the top of the 5th by way of a pair of singles by Sanfrey; as well as singles by Varkony, Davis, and sophomore Thatcher Smith. And more walks…

Three freshmen had multiple hits for the Clippers: Jackson Davis (4; 2 doubles), Roman Sanfrey (3), and Stephen Varkony (2). Five Clippers had multiple RBIs: Davis (3), Smith (2), Nelson (2), Sanfrey (2), and freshman Jameson Neal (2). Griffith and fellow freshman Jacob Conway, along with sophomore Ayden Dennison, each contributed an RBI. And, we had 6 players score at least 3 runs: Varkony and Davis each scored 4 times, while Conway, Griffith, Sanfrey, and Dennison each crossed the plate 3 times.

The JV squad will be back in action this evening at home against Toronto, while the Varsity looks to take the season series on the road against East Palestine on Wednesday #ClipThat
