After suffering six consecutive losses, the Clippers were not only playing against an opponent on Wednesday night, but ourselves as well. When losses string together, the wins become that much more difficult to come by. However, the Clippers were able to survive a Leetonia Bear attack on Wednesday evening and pick up a much needed win by a final score of 8-7. After a scoreless first three innings, there were 11 total runs scored in the 4th inning alone. In the top half, the Bears struck for 4 runs to put the Clippers in a hole. However, we responded with 7 runs of our own in the bottom half, highlighted by a huge bases loaded single (turned “triple” due an error) by senior Daniel Goehring. However, after taking a 7-4 lead, the Bears would get one back in the 5th and two in the 6th to tie that game at 7. So, the Clippers had to find a way! In the bottom of the 6th, it would be Goehring who would get on base via a walk. Speedy sophomore Rocco Mediate would come on to pinch run, and with the Clippers needing to manufacture a run, Mediate would steal both second base and third base before scoring on a wild pitch to give Clippers the 8-7. Sophomore Avery Young would come on in the 7th to close the door on the Bears and earn his first career save. Fellow sophomore Nick Klindworth was credited with his first career win in relief of junior starter Sam Inboden.
ON THE MOUND: Junior Sam Inboden, 5.0 innings, 9 strikeouts, 3 earned runs… Sophomore Nick Klindworth (W), 1.0 inning, 1 strikeout, 2 earned runs… Sophomore Avery Young (S), 1.0 inning, 2 strikeouts, 0 earned runs.
AT THE PLATE: Sophomore Avery Young, 2 hits, a run, 4 stolen bases… Senior Daniel Goehring, a hit, 2 RBIs… Junior Sam Inboden, a hit, an RBI, a run… Freshman Liam McElwain, a hit, an RBI, a run… Junior Hunter Davanzo, a hit, a run, 3 stolen bases… Senior Blake Unger, a hit, a run… Senior Max Conway, an RBI, a run… Senior Reese Roush and sophomore Rocco Mediate (2 stolen bases) each scored a run.
The Clippers will be back in action this evening, taking on the Beaver Local Beavers at home before prom weekend gets underway. The JV squad will play extra innings until dark with Beaver Local’s JV squad at the conclusion of the varsity game.
