Little leaguers running onto the field, the national anthem, a first pitch, a little rivalry… Wednesday evening felt like the old ballgame should in our second of two contests against Lisbon. Senior Reese Roush took the hill for his second start of the year and went 4 strong innings, giving up just 2 hits and allowing 0 earned runs; Reese punched out 5 Blue Devils and got the Win for his efforts. Sophomore slinger Nick Klindworth would come on in relief of Reese, earning a 3-inning save (the first of his varsity career); just like senior Daniel Goehring put in the books on Tuesday. Nick gave up just 1 earned run in his closing effort to secure the 8-5 win for the Clippers.
Defensively, Junior Hunter Davanzo made another spectacular play in left field, just like he did against the very same team on Monday. And, in the top of 7th, freshman catcher Liam McElwain went and made a huge play on a straight up pop fly in foul territory that took him all the way to the brick backstop at Legion Field; Liam showed no fear and made a great catch that took him to the ground and recorded a huge second out in the inning before a foul pop out to freshman third baseman Ethan Lehnerd ended it.
AT THE PLATE: Sophomore Avery Young – 3 hits, 2 RBIs, 2 runs… Freshman Ethan Lehnerd – 2 hits, 1 RBI, 2 runs… Senior Max Conway – a double and 2 RBIs… Seniors Reese Roush and Blake Unger, junior Sam Inboden, and freshman Liam McElwain all recorded singles.
After varsity and JV cancelations today, both squads look to get back in action tomorrow with the varsity at Leetonia and the JV at South Range.
