Having to not only face the other team, but the elements as well, we put a pair of Ws in the book that happened to end up in the same exact score, 12-4, on Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday at Lisbon, the weather held up early on (after a deluge of weekend rain), and the bats took advantage; coming right out of the gate and scoring 5 runs in the first inning off of Lisbon’s ace, who has given us fits in the past. We would then tack on 4 in the fourth and 3 in the sixth. Sophomore Avery Young was solid in his start on the hill, going 5 innings and allowing just 1 earned run, while striking out 6 Blue Devils, to earn the win. Sophomore Nick Klindworth kept things at bay in the sixth, and then the weather took a nasty turn on sophomore Drennen Bosela who was able to find a way to work through the seventh without really being able to feel the ball. Junior Hunter Davanzo and freshman Beckett Wilson made a pair of highlight reel plays in the contest, and senior Zane Strohecker picked up his first varsity career hit and RBI.
AT THE PLATE (Monday): Junior Sam Inboden – 2 hits, a double and a triple, 3 RBIs… Senior Daniel Goehring – 2 hits, 3 RBIs… Senior Max Conway – 2 hits, including a triple, 1 RBI… Senior Blake Unger – 2 hits, 1 RBI… Seniors Reese Roush and Zane Strohecker, junior Hunter Davanzo, and freshman Liam McElwain each added a hit.
On Tuesday at Wellsville, the weather from the jump was… frigid. What is usually the temperature during high school basketball season decided to sneak its way into April. In what was one of the only games played in the area, it took a little bit of time for the bats to “get warm.” However, after scoring just 2 runs in the first 3 innings, we would go on to score 10 throughout the next 4. Freshman Ethan Lehnerd picked up his first varsity career win on the mound. Lehnerd went 4 innings, allowing 0 earned runs, while striking out 7 Tigers. Senior Daniel Goehring then came on in 3 innings of relief, logging not only his first varsity career strikeouts (3) but also his first career save (the rare three inning save). Daniel pumped 32 of his 41 pitches for strikes.
AT THE PLATE (Tuesday): Junior Hunter Davanzo – 3 hits, 2 RBIs… Senior Daniel Goehring – 2 hits, including a double, 2 RBIs… Freshman Liam McElwain – 2 hits, 2 RBIs… Sophomore Avery Young – 2 hits, including a double, 1 RBI… Seniors Max Conway (a double and 3 runs), Reese Roush (1 RBI), and Blake Unger along with junior Sam Inboden (3 RBIs) added hits.
The varsity squad is back in action this evening for a rematch from Monday with EOAC opponent Lisbon. 5:00 PM first pitch, with the “Kelly Financial Group” Little League team running onto the field with the players.
