The last couple of years, the weather has not been kind to the Clippers on Opening Day and this one was no exception. But, this year, the whole team came together to make sure this one was not put on hold; coming out and leaving no doubt in a large margin victory over Wellsville on Friday evening.
It was a night of “firsts” across the board, as four guys picked up their first career hit(s): seniors Daniel Goehring and Blake Unger, sophomore Rocco Mediate, and freshman Ethan Lehnerd. And, the moment of the night, senior Max Conway hit his first career home run, a no doubter to left, and to top it off, it was GRAND SLAM!
Sophomore Drennen Bosela logged his first career strikeouts on the mound in his, six up six down, pair of innings of relief of junior starter Sam Inboden, who himself had one heck of a game.
Along with a strong three inning start, Sam had a phenomenal day at the plate. Not one but two base clearing doubles with the bases loaded were part of his three hit, SEVEN RBI game.
It was not always “easy.” Wellsville threatened right out of the gate, but it would be the arm of senior centerfielder Zane Strohecker that would halt the Tigers in their tracks; cutting down the would be go-ahead score in the top of the first. The Clippers did not look back after that.
AT THE PLATE: Junior Sam Inboden – 3 hits, including 2 three-run doubles, 7 RBIs… Senior Max Conway – 2 hits, including a grand slam home run, 4 RBIs… Senior Daniel Goehring – 2 hits, including a three-run double, 3 RBIs… Senior Blake Unger – 2 hits, including a two-run double, 3 RBIs… Junior Hunter Davanzo, sophomore Rocco Mediate, and freshman Ethan Lehnerd each logged a single with 1, 2, and 1 RBI, respectively… Nine Clippers scored at least 2 runs in the contest, including most of those listed plus senior Reese Roush, sophomore Drennen Bosela, and sophomore Avery Young.
ON THE MOUND: Junior starter Sam Inboden – Win, 3 innings, 0 runs, 4 strikeouts… Sophomore reliever Drennen Bosela – 2 no-hit innings, 0 runs, 4 strikeouts.
The Varsity squad is back in action for a BIG ONE at Firestone Park on Monday against East Palestine, while the JV guys will take on Canfield today at 12:00 PM.
