Back-to-Back Undefeated EOAC Champions

Well, it is official! Your 2024 Columbiana Clippers have gone undefeated in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference in baseball for the second consecutive season. There were certainly times when things looked a little sketchy, but in the end, our guys ultimately came through in games that I believe will actually help us as we navigate the state tournament journey. A dominant performance on the hill and at the plate from senior Alex Eusebio capped off the feat for the Clippers on Wednesday against East Palestine.

After an extra inning affair with the Bulldogs on Monday, we were not going to take anything for granted in this one. So, Eusebio took the ball and went right to work with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. And, after going the first five innings without a run on Monday, the offense did not mess around in the bottom of the first. It would be Alex who would help himself to really get things going with a smoked double that scored seniors Ian Less and Colin Keleman (who both reached on walks). The third and final run of the first inning would come on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Hunter Davanzo, which scored Eusebio.

Outside of back-to-back batters in the top of the fourth, East Palestine did not get any other baserunners in the game. Eusebio struck out ten Bulldogs on the evening, and he had two innings when he K’d up the side 1-2-3. He earned his sixth W of the season for this performance.

The rest of the game offensively was more of the same. Eusebio would reach base in all four of his plate appearances, logging two doubles, two walks, three RBIs, and two runs scored… Oh, and two stolen bases. Senior Anthony Hall also had two hits, the second of which was a double that scored Eusebio to seal things for the Clippers for an 11-1 mercy rule victory. Seniors Devin Daugherty and Colin Keleman, as well as junior Reese Roush recorded a hit as well. Daugherty would have two RBIs on the evening. Keleman reached base all four times, logging three walks to go with his hit. Senior Ian Less reached all three times that he came to the plate, going 0-for-0 with a walk and two hit-by-pitches. He would come around to score all three times, and he also stole three bases in the game.

As mentioned, this win gave the Clippers back-to-back undefeated league championships. 24-0. A very well deserved title for this senior class to be able to hang their hats on. However, bigger things are on the horizon. And, my belief in this team has no bounds. It all starts on Wednesday against Monday’s winner of Crestview vs. Waterloo.
