One of the worst things a team can do after a big win, is come out flat in the very next game. After a huge, historical, 3-0 victory over the Crestview Rebels on Friday night, the Clippers were right back to it on Saturday afternoon, in East Liverpool.
Sophomore Sam Inboden took the ball for Columbiana, and he went five solid innings with the only real blemish being a 3-run homer that may very well have been a routine flyout at our place. Sam earned his second win of the week, after getting his first career win in the tornado warning shortened home Southern game. Freshman Avery Young came on to close out the final two innings of the 11-5 win for the Clippers; he did not surrender a run.
After scoring just three runs, all in the second inning, in Friday night’s big win, Columbiana came out in the first inning of this game and were held scoreless. But, that changed very quickly as the Clippers struck for five runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning of this one.
The second inning began with a senior Colin Keleman single, following by junior Max Conway reaching on an error. Senior Alex Eusebio followed those up with a walk, loading the bases. Inboden came to plate to help his own cause, and that he did. Sam did a job, sending a fly ball to the centerfielder for a sacrifice fly. But, even better, the centerfielder dropped the ball, allowing a run to score and still leaving only one out in the inning. Senior Anthony Hall then stayed hot and doubled, bringing in two runs. Senior Ian Less then came to plate and hit the Clippers’ second sac fly of the inning, scoring Inboden. The freshman Young finished the scoring in the second inning with a smoked double that brought in Hall.
The third inning was more of the same, as the Clippers continued to build a big lead over a solid Potters team. After Keleman and Conway walks, and a sophomore Hunter Davanzo hit by pitch, Columbiana was once again in business. Inboden and Hall each hit RBI singles, followed by another Less sac fly. Inboden would score to make it a 9-1 lead after the Potters threw the ball all over the yard.
The bats, for the most part, would go quiet again until the top of the sixth inning when the Clippers added on two insurance runs. These thanks to a Less triple, and Young and senior Devin Daugherty RBI singles.
The Clippers finished the game with eleven runs on nine hits. Leading the way were Anthony Hall and Avery Young. Each had two hits apiece including a double, each stole two bases, and each had multiple RBIs (Hall, 3; Young, 2). Ian Less also contributed two RBIs with his two sacrifice flies. Less also had that triple in the sixth inning. Senior Dylan Hogan logged a pinch hit double in the top of the fifth inning.
Following up Friday night’s errorless game on defense, the Clippers came out Saturday and once again showed greatness with the gloves. Eusebio logged four assists from the hot corner, Daugherty tracked down five balls in centerfield, and Young made a very nice running grab near the fence in right before coming in to pitch the very next inning. I said before, and I will say it again, with our pitching staff and solid defense behind them, this team will be very hard to beat.
