Just Bear with Me

Last night, the Columbiana Clippers and the Leetonia Bears squared off at Firestone Park after the game was moved from Leetonia to Columbiana due to the weather-caused poor conditions of Leetonia’s field. Although at Firestone, the Clippers were still considered the away team for this EOAC matchup. Columbiana wasted no time jumping out to a large, 7-0, lead in the top of the first inning and did not look back, adding 3 more runs in the second, 5 in the third, and 2 in the fifth inning. The Bears did score 1 unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, the only given up by starting pitcher, senior Ian Less; making for a 17-1 final in five innings (mercy rule). Less worked four of those innings before handing the ball to fellow senior Colin Keleman, who came on to record the final three outs, in the fifth. Less was credited with the win, and he recorded three strikeouts. Keleman logged a strikeout during his inning of work, as well.

At the plate, the Clips did not exactly tear the cover off the ball en route to seventeen runs; the only extra base hit in the game was a double by senior Devin Daugherty in the third inning. However, we did put the ball in play a lot, recording eleven total hits and only striking out twice. Thirteen of the fifteen players that dressed for the game reached base safely.

The biggest performance of the game came from sophomore Sam Inboden, who was actually making his first varsity start as a hitter and position player in this game (Sam started a game on the mound for the Clippers in 2023). In the very first inning, Sam got a knock to right field, driving in the first of his four RBIs on the day. This hit and RBI were also the first of Inboden’s varsity career. He added in another single to right in the third, which brought in two runs; he also added in an RBI groundout. Sam also stole two bases and scored two runs.

Along with his third inning double, Daugherty also had a single in the first inning. Other Clippers with hits were: freshman Avery Young, junior Reese Roush, and seniors Ian Less, Colin Keleman, Anthony Hall, Alex Eusebio, and Cam Clancy. Clancy’s hit would bring in two in the second inning. The freshman Young scored three runs on the day, while six other Clippers crossed the plate twice.

Columbiana will be back in action on Thu… No, Fri… Ugh… Hopefully Saturday for game two with Leetonia at 11:00 AM! #UpUp&Away
