I think it is safe to say that the baseball aspect of Columbiana Baseball’s, first ever, Myrtle Beach trip did not go as anticipated. The plan was to go down, go 3-0 and have a blast at the beach and its attractions in the meantime. It would only be the latter part that held true, as the Clippers were unable to come away with a victory down there. After a very exciting, hard-fought five innings, it was the sixth inning that would ultimately be the difference in Game #1 as the Hopewell-Loudon (Bascom, OH) Chieftains struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving them a 6-3 lead, which would go on to be the final. Game #2 immediately followed Game #1 on Friday… Right after losing in heartbreaking fashion, the boys looked to get one back right away against the Buckeye (Medina, OH) Bucks. After three very competitive, back-and-forth innings, it would be the fourth inning when things came undone. A 3-2 deficit quickly turned into an 11-2 rout in a matter of three outs; leading to an eventual 13-2 loss in five innings. Early Saturday morning, the Clippers came out firing against the Bulldogs of Hazard (Hazard, KY). Things were looking very good for the Clips early on, jumping out to a 5-0, then 6-1, lead in the first few innings. However, the Bulldogs did not go away; through absolute refusal to strikeout, the Bulldogs put the ball in play (albeit, weakly), and over the next couple innings, they chipped away at our lead, eventually tying it up in the fourth inning. And then, a common theme of the weekend, the “one bad inning” came in the fifth, giving Hazard an 11-6 lead that would stick to the end.
Although we had to walk away empty handed in the win column, there are certainly some highlights and things to note from the three games we got the opportunity to play in Myrtle Beach:
+In Game #1, senior lefty Anthony Hall was absolutely electric on the mound for his first four innings of work, shutting out the Chieftains in that time.
+Also in Game #1, senior Devin Daugherty was locked in offensively, collecting three hits, including the team’s first extra-base hit of the season with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
+In Game #2, Daugherty continued to produce with two more hits and another RBI. Devin would have five total hits on Friday alone.
+Junior Max Conway also contributed in a big way in Game #2, with a smoked triple into the right field corner. It even turned into a “little league homerun,” when the throw to third went out of play.
+Juniors Dan Goehring, Gavin Guy, Lathen Tucker, Blake Unger, and Will Ward all saw their first ever varsity action in Game #2. Goehring and Ward both pitched, and Will even logged a strikeout. At the plate, Dan and Gavin were both hit by pitches, while Ward drew a walk.
+In Game #3, the bats did start to come alive a bit, as the Clips pieced together six runs on nine hits.
+Two of those hits in Game #3 once again came from Devin Daugherty. This pushed Devin’s hit total for the weekend to seven. He also added another RBI to his tally in Game #3.
+Senior catcher Colin Keleman also smacked two hits, and he also drove in an individual season high three RBIs in Game #3.
+Game #3 also saw, not one but, two triples from the Clips; one from senior second baseman Cam Clancy and the other from senior left fielder Dylan Hogan.
+Senior righty Alex Eusebio was the victim of a lot of bad luck in Game #3. All game long, he generated very weak contact from the Hazard hitters… Unfortunately, it was this weak contact that was ironically to the detriment of Clips as it actually helped the Bulldogs utilize their speed.
Although we wound up 0-3 for the weekend, we learned a lot as a team. We will utilize what we learned to help us down the road in May. But, the memories made off the field were priceless. From beach football and water slides to hot tub hangouts and minigolf, the bonds created on this trip will be remembered far more than the record we produced. However, now that we back in Ohio, we have some business to take care of… And it starts today! #UpUp&Away #MyrtleBeach2024
