It wasn’t perfect – it wasn’t pretty, but it was winning baseball on opening day for the Columbiana Clippers. The defending undefeated EOAC champions came away with a 5-0 victory against the conference opponent Lisbon Blue Devils (David Anderson High School) Monday evening. After five and a half innings of some not so great baseball, the bats showed signs of life in the bottom of the sixth. The Clippers held tight to a 1-0 lead, thanks to the hustle of senior second baseman Cameron Clancy in the third inning. The bottom of sixth got rolling with a one out infield single from senior catcher Colin Keleman. Junior Zane Strohecker would then come on to pinch run for Keleman and got himself his first career stolen base. Zane came around to score his first varsity run when a junior Max Conway smashed a ball right through the wickets of the shortstop. Senior left fielder Dylan Hogan then brought Conway in with an RBI single down the right field line. And after Hogan scored on a passed ball, freshman utility player Avery Young would then get his first career hit, as well as collect his first stolen base and run scored. Junior right hander Reese Roush came in for the 7th inning to close things down to seal the Clippers’ first W of 2024.
Credit where credit is due, though. Lisbon’s hurler Brady Carpenter came in and went toe-to-toe with one of the best pitchers in the county, in senior Alex Eusebio, for 5 innings. Carpenter was a strike firing machine, and he came right after our hitters for a total of 14 strikeouts. But, it was Eusebio who was able to keep his composure and get outs when he needed them most to keep the Blue Devils off of the board. Alex finished with 12 strikeouts over his 6 innings of work, and he allowed just 1 hit.
After a rainout of the second game of the series yesterday, a make-up date is still TBD, as the next stop for the Clippers will be in Myrtle Beach. A double header on Friday and an early morning game on Saturday are on the docket for the Clips, and we are excited to get down there #UpUp&Away
