Columbiana (6-0) defeated Ursuline (4-3) by a 4-2 margin on a perfect Tuesday night at Cene Park in Struthers. Zachary Pleksa (2-0) picked up the win for the Clippers as he went 5 strong innings striking out 11 allowing just one unearned run. Seth Spooner picked up his first save of the year closing out the final two innings allowing one unearned run and striking out four.
Columbiana would get on the board first in the third inning. A one out Pleska bunt single was followed by a Spooner double giving the Clippers the early lead. After a groundout, Alex Eusebio added to the tally with a two out single bringing home Spooner and a 2-0 lead.
Columbiana would add to the lead in the 5th when Riley McElwain would scamper home on a wild pitch with two outs. Ursuline, however, responded in the bottom frame as they managed one unearned run but loaded the bases with two outs looking to tie the game. Pleska would find a little extra in the situation and struck out the Irish hitter ending the threat.
In the seventh, Columbiana got an insurance run as Pleska walked and moved to third with two outs. McElwain would come up big with another 2 out RBI single for the Clippers extending the lead to 4-1.
Ursuline had one last rally in them scoring an unearned run and bringing the tying run to the plate in slugger Brady Shannon. Spooner would win the battle and close out the game striking out Shannan looking to earn the save.
Spooner, McElwain and Eusebio led the way for Columbiana with two hits apiece. Brady Kridler was productive at the plate as he drew a base on balls and had a sacrifice bunt.
Next up for Columbiana will be Southern as the Clippers travel to Salineville to take on the Indians in the second game of their EOAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM.
