Columbiana (7-4) dropped a tight one to Berkshire (6-4) 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Berkshire took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but the Clippers answered back scoring two in the bottom of the frame. Zach Pleska singled with two outs and on a perfectly executed hit and run was able to come all the way home from first on a Seth Spooner single. Spooner, however, was aggressive on the basepaths and after a Badger error also came around to score giving the Clippers a 2-1 lead.
Berkshire would take the lead in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on an RBI triple and a two out RBI single. Columbiana rallied in the bottom half loading the bases with no outs. Logan Hoschar singled which was followed by Joe Wilczak and Pleska each being hit by pitches. The rally was sniffed out though by the Badgers as they threw Hoschar out at home on a ground ball and were able to gun Wilczak at home on a sacrifice fly attempt.
In the seventh, the Clippers tried to rally again as Tyler Andersen walked and Trevor Dearing singled with two outs but the rally fell short giving the Badgers the win.
Devin Daugherty (1-1) took the tough luck loss. He was excellent all day allowing three runs (2 earned) and three hits in six innings of work striking out six and walking zero. Spooner finished it out striking out the side in the seventh.
In game two the bats went silent as Columbiana dropped one to Ursuline (6-8) 5-0. The Clippers managed just three hits in the game. Seth Spooner, Tyler Andersen and Bayden Pipoly each singled in the game.
Alex Eusebio (2-1) pitched a complete game for Columbiana. After giving up an early 1st inning run Eusebio buckled down and was excellent for the next three frames. Without any offensive support a couple hits and a walk in the fifth inning gave Ursuline all they would need to blow the game open as the Irish scored 4 runs in their half bringing the score to its final 5-0 mark. Eusebio finished his six innings of work giving up five runs (4 earned) and six hits while striking out five.
The Clippers look to bounce back and end their three game losing streak Sunday at Canal Park. Columbiana and Lisbon will square off at Noon in a key EOAC matchup.
