The 2020 season was not anything that we had hoped it would be with the cancellation of the high school season. However, in late May we learned that baseball could be played again and a summer league was formed. With the help of coaches from East Liverpool, Lisbon, Salem, South Range, United and Western Reserve a league was formed. Overall, we played 19 games this summer including a league tournament championship and a game at Eastwood Field home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. In all 23 different players participated in games including six players from the class of 2020. We also had two members from East Palestine and one from Canfield join our summer squad. One issue with summer baseball is often times there will be games where there is a struggle to get enough players with vacations, work and other sports going on. Our kids did a tremendous job this summer as for most games we had 14-16 players at the game. This was outstanding and shows the commitment level of our Clippers.
The following are some of the significant statistics accumulated by some of our players this summer:
Bayden Pipoly- Led team with 22 hits (22/50 .440 avg, 25 runs scored)
Logan Hoschar- Led team with 15 RBI (20/56 .357 avg)
Ryan Fahs- Led team with a .536 avg (15/28, 11 runs scored)
Carson Dota- 14 hits and 9 RBI (.269 avg)
Chase Franken- .462 avg and 1.677 OPS (12/26, 4 2B’s, 3 3B’s, 2 HR’s)
Brady Dixon- .367 avg (11/30, 14 RBI)
Brady Kridler- 11 hits, 8 RBI, 9 Runs
Patrick Bender- 7 SB’s
Joey Wilczak- Led team with 27.2 IP and 25 K’s
Trevor Dearing- 13 IP, 3.23 ERA
Johnny Ervin- 8.1 IP, 3.36 ERA
It was an honor and a privilege for all of our coaches to spend two months with the players this summer. Despite the high school season being cancelled baseball was still played and we were also able to honor our seniors in a walkoff victory over United on June 13th.
A huge thank you to all the players, coaches, parents and teams who allowed this to happen this summer. Baseball was played, when for a while we weren’t sure it was going to happen. Players and coaches learned a lot about each other and it is something that will help us moving forward into the 2021 season.
Go Clippers!!
