Three Pittsburgh Pirate players and two coaches visited Columbiana High School today in their annual Care-a-Van event that leads into Piratefest this weekend. The players, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Cody Ponce and Yacksel Rios along with pitching coaches Oscar Marin and Justin Meccage answered questions posed by Clipper baseball and softball players.
The Pirate players and coaches talked about a number of different topics including what it is like to adjust from playing in the high school to the minor leagues or college along with what it takes to be a pro. They offered insights in how to prepare both mentally and physically before a season and gave the players some words of wisdom on how to deal with adversity. The coaches also talked about arm care and preparation of playing through a long season.
After the Q&A session the Pirate players and coaches signed autographs and took pictures with the Clipper players. In addition, many Clippers got an opportunity to talk one on one with the Pirates and gain even more valuable insight.
The Pirates kick off spring training on February 10th with opening day scheduled for March 26th in Tampa.
The Clippers begin spring training on February 24th and will open the season March 30th at Leetonia.
