The Clipper baseball team swept Liberty in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader 13-2 and 11-6. The wins moved the Columbiana record to 3-4 as the Clippers are riding a 3 game win streak.
Game 1 Highlights
Zach Frenger (1-0) started on the mound for Columbiana and pitched 4 shutout innings, earning the win. Frenger was solid and came up big in the top of the fourth inning in a scoreless tie. In the inning, the Leopards of Liberty loaded the bases with one out. Frenger buckled down striking out the next two Liberty hitters to preserve the scoreless tie.
With the momentum clearly on the Clippers side, Columbiana struck for 13 runs in the bottom of the inning to break the game wide open. Tim Davin got things going by ripping a double to centerfield. Devin Rice reached on an error which scored Davin giving the Red and White a 1-0 lead. Josh Herbert laced a single to right bringing in Rice and the onslaught was on. In the inning, Frenger, Dylan Davin, Mitch Davidson, Tim Davin (2 hits), Rice, Drew Cyrus and Joey Bennett all collected hits.
Frenger led the team with 3 RBI’s while Bennett and T. Davin each collected 2.
Game 2 Highlights
The Clippers started game two where they left off in game one plating three runs in the first to turn an early 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead. Davidson lead the inning off with a walk, advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and eventually came into score on a passed ball. Matt Weidner and Keenan Green followed with singles while T. Davin walked to load the bases for Columbiana. Rice produced a run scoring ground out and Austin Saverko hit a sacrifice fly to round out the scoring in the 1st.
Columbiana continued to tack on runs gaining a commanding 11-3 lead after five innings leading to the 11-6 final score. At the plate, Weidner collected two hits including a double while also walking two times and scoring three runs on the afternoon. Zane Adkins added two hits for Columbiana while Rice scored two runs. Nate Armstrong added two RBI’s for the Red and White.
Jake Clark picked up his first win of the year (1-1). Clark pitched four innings giving up three runs (2 ER) and striking out seven. Clark also helped himself out at the plate collecting two hits and scoring two runs.
The Clippers will take their 3 game win streak to Wellsville on Monday as they look to even their record and move to 1-0 in the ITCL White Division. The scheduled first pitch is 5:00 pm.
