The Columbiana Clippers Varsity baseball team downed the Mineral Ridge Rams 6-3 Friday night at Bob Cene Park in Struthers, Ohio. Devin Rice (1-0) picked up the win for the Clippers.
Columbiana struck early scoring 4 runs in the first inning and never looked back. Mitchell Davidson led off the game with a single. Matt Weidner followed with a perfectly laid bunt that went for a single. Keenan Green then loaded the bases with a single to center. Devin Rice knocked in a run on an error and Josh Herbert followed with a 2 run single to center. Drew Cyrus rounded out the scoring with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt that brought in Rice.
The Clippers tacked on two more runs in the second when Weidner and Green hit back to back doubles with the latter scoring Weidner. Rice later singled to bring in Green.
Austin Saverko had a notable day as he was hit by a pitch each of his first three at bats.
Rice started on the mound for Columbiana giving up 2 runs (0 ER) in his three innings of work. Rice struck out 8 while walking 3. Davidson finished the final four innings for the team in Red giving up 1 run (0 ER) while striking out 2.
The Clippers varsity is back in action Saturday afternoon at Firestone Park as they take of the Liberty Leopards in a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
